Rs 8 lakh per annum income limit for EWS quota in Medical NEET is correct, the central government told the Supreme Court

The Center on Tuesday upheld its decision before the Supreme Court to uphold the annual income limit of Rs 8 lakh fixed for determining the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) for reservation in NEET for admission to medical courses. An affidavit filed by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment before the apex court said that the principle of fixing the amount is rational and under Articles 14, 15 and 16 of the Constitution.

The method adopted for determining the creamy layer for Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation will be equally applicable for determining the EWS category as the basic premise is that if the economic condition of a person/his family is strong enough, then He cannot require the benefits of reservation at the expense of others.

Major General (Retd) S. R. The Sinha Commission was constituted by the United Progressive Alliance government in 2010 and recommended welfare measures for the EWS category. The ministry said in the affidavit that the criteria for determining the EWS category were prepared after consultation with all concerned stakeholders.
