The Indian Air Force has given information about the incident by tweeting. Indian Air Force said that the IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter has crashed. Chief of Defense Staff Bipin Rawat was aboard in this. The helicopter crashed near Coonoor. An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.
Search and rescue operation begins
According to sources, local military officials have reached the spot. Search and rescue operation has been started. Sources say that the local people have taken two bodies with 80 percent burns to the local hospital.
Some bodies can be seen facing down in the area of the accident. Efforts are on to retrieve the bodies and verify the identity.
There were 14 people in the helicopter
Sources said that a total of 14 people, including Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife, defense assistants, security commandos and Air Force pilots were on board the helicopter.
