Delhi Lockdown: The capital of the country, Delhi, is in bad shape due to pollution. There is no chance of getting rid of it even in the next two-four days. The central and Delhi government are taking many steps to control pollution. Amidst all this, the Delhi government, in an emergency meeting ordered by the Supreme Court, suggested a week-long lockdown and work from home (WFH) to fight the capital's toxic air crisis. It is known that due to air pollution in Delhi, schools have also been closed. The Delhi government also recommended that construction and industrial activities in the city be stopped. A day after the Supreme Court raised strong questions on the crisis and called for immediate action, officials at the Center and Delhi discussed fighting pollution.
After the meeting, Delhi Minister Gopal Rai said, “We have proposed a weekend lockdown, we are ready for it. Our strategy will now depend on the directions of the court." Officials also said that work from home has been suggested for government and private offices.
To deal with the city's pollution crisis, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday announced several emergency measures including closure of schools for a week, ban on construction activities and 'work from home' for government employees. Gopal Rai told reporters that teams of Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) reached several places on Monday to see whether the measures were implemented or not. He found that the construction works have been stopped.
The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Air Quality Management Commission to hold a joint meeting. On Tuesday, the states of Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh participated in this meeting. Rai said, 'In the meeting, Delhi government officials suggested implementation of 'Work from Home' (WFH) policy and closure of industries in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) to control pollution. Other states also gave their views, we are waiting for the official notification of the commission.
